Computer-created pictures purporting to show Nicolás Maduro detained following his apprehension by the United States have garnered many millions of views across the internet.
How Fake Pictures of the President Appeared Within Hours
Initial inauthentic AI image seemingly showing him led off a aircraft emerged within hours. The graphic was not shared any verified American sources; it was instead posted on the platform X by an account purporting to be an “AI video art enthusiast”.
We’ve checked Google’s SynthID, which found the image was created or altered with generative AI.
Further AI-generated images were disseminated in the subsequent hours, seemingly depicting more angles of Maduro detained. Noticeable logos on the graphics show they were posted by an Instagram profile called ultravfx.
The detection tool indicates all of these images were also generated or edited Google AI.
Real Photo Posted but Fakes Continued
Donald Trump released the initial authentic image of Maduro handcuffed aboard the US Navy ship on Saturday morning. But even after the authentic image was made public, synthetic pictures kept circulating but were updated to incorporate the grey tracksuit seen on Maduro.
Digital forensics indicate the new fake images were initially shared on TikTok by a digital art account. Again, the AI-watermark detector confirms the new graphics were generated or edited Google AI.
