Major Web Outage Impacts Numerous Sites and Mobile Apps

A large-scale internet failure has impacted many websites and apps around the world, and users experiencing issues accessing the internet after problems at the cloud computing system.

The disrupted services include Snapchat, Roblox, Signal, and the language learning app Duolingo, as well as a host of Amazon-operated operations like its main retail platform and the Ring home security firm.

Across the United Kingdom, the financial institution Lloyds was affected along with its affiliates the bank Halifax and Bank of Scotland, while there were additional accounts of problems reaching the HM Revenue and Customs online portal on Monday morning. Also in the UK, many Ring device owners used online platforms to state their doorbells were malfunctioning.

In the UK alone, reports of problems on specific apps totaled the tens of thousands for each app.

Officials confirmed that the outage originated in the eastern region of the US at the cloud division, a section that supplies essential online framework for many companies, who lease capacity on the company's servers. The cloud platform is the world’s largest web hosting system.

Shortly after the start of the day (PDT) in the United States (8am BST), officials reported “higher failure rates and latencies” for AWS services in a zone on the east coast of the United States. The widespread consequence was seen to hit apps globally, and the problem monitoring service reporting issues with the corresponding services in various regions.

The outage tracker Thousand Eyes, a service that tracks web disruptions, additionally noted a increase in problems on Monday morning, with many of them located in the Virginia area, the site of the eastern US data center where officials confirmed the problems started.
